Introduction to Sound Arts

Week 1: Introduction to Sound Arts

My interest in Sound Arts:

My interest in Sound Arts has always intrigued me. I use sound and soundscapes that I make as a form of communication. It has always been a means of self-expression for me. It essentially allows me to converse without the need for words. I am a massive admirer of soundscapes that can tell a story and arouse specific emotions in people. For example, horror soundtracks or emotional instrumentals.

I’ve always been drawn to the sounds of the outdoors, especially to atmospheric soundscapes. I’ve always enjoyed going on big adventures to new places and just listening to my surroundings. I tend to take my phone everywhere to ensure that I always have a recording device available.

In the future, I hope to go into the game sound design industry. I want to combine my love of provoking emotions with my love of creating soundscapes to create atmospheric sounds for a range of games. I have been playing games for the majority of my life and know the importance of the right soundtrack at the right time. For example, it’d be inappropriate to play upbeat, cheerful music over a character going through a betrayal. Another smaller example, you wouldn’t put a gunshot as the sound of a character walking.

What does Sound Arts mean to me?:

Sound Arts, to me, means the study and practical use of sound and soundscapes. It’s how sound is used within media and performance formats. Sound art includes many genres, including spoken word, CD/Vinyl, Foley, and many more. As mentioned before, it means a way of communication to me. It allows me to express my feelings and thoughts; I find regular communication difficult. Because sound arts is an internationally recognised art form, it is now much easier to find information about sound and study it further.
