Introduction to Sound Arts

Blog Post: select and find a book from the unit bibliography. Choose one quote from the book that you find confusing or too long and copy it into a new blog post.

For this lesson, we were tasked with going to the library and picking out a relevant book that we found interesting or confusing. We then had to read it out to the class and explain what made us pick this book. I picked “animal music: sound and song in the natural world.” I had to rephrase the paragraph I chose to take more sense to me. This lesson was to help us get better at writing and prepare for the essay required for the unit. it’s also just good practise to write with the proper grammar and advanced vocabulary.

Paraphrase the quote using your own (different) words to achieve greater clarity

Original Text: “This, however, is no simple process – plants are fickle and do not readily give up their secrets. To convince them, the shaman must go to extraordinary lengths to show he or she is worthy of possessing the magic melodies. Because plants are seen as extremely jealous, shamans must abstain from sex. The plants also hate strong smells, particularly those associated with sex like semen, but also menstruation.”

Paraphrased text: “This is not a simple process, however, because plants are fickle and do not commonly reveal their secrets. To persuade them, the shaman must go to great lengths to demonstrate that he or she is worthy of possessing magical melodies. Shamans must refrain from having sex because plants are considered to be extremely envious. Strong odours are also disliked by the plants, especially those related to sex, including such semen, and even menstruation.”
